The Physician Inventor
James A. Harris, MD, FACS
Like many technological advances, the Harris S.A.F.E. System™ ’s development began with an experience-based what if?
James A. Harris, MD, a clinical professor in Hair Transplantation, developed the S.A.F.E. Scribe to advance excellence in hair restoration surgery. Dr. Harris is the 2014 winner of the Golden Follicle Award, bestowed annually to an ISHRS member who has made outstanding and significant clinical contributions related to the field of hair restoration surgery specifically for contributions advancing FUE surgery.
Dr. Harris, is a leading advocate for FUE, having seen its benefits as founder/director of the Hair Sciences Center of Colorado, a practice dedicated exclusively to providing the very best in medical and surgical treatments for hair loss. As a faculty member of the University of Colorado School of Medicine he taught hair restoration to physician residents.
Dr. Harris, along with his specialist colleagues in the International Society for Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS), are concerned by the transection rate for harvested follicular units using the FUE technique. Losing as many as 20 to 30 percent of potential follicles is not acceptable. What if, instead of using a sharp dissection tool, specialists were to harvest follicular units with an instrument with no sharp cutting surfaces? The question compelled Dr. Harris to design the first blunt-punch in the field of hair restoration.
Chairman of the ISHRS FUE, Dr. Harris and committee members research committee are charged with the design and implementation of rigorous scientific study of FUE. Dr. Harris also helped advance the aesthetics and surgical techniques of hair restoration with the technique of Recombinant Follicular Unit Transplantation, a method to increase transplant hair density in a natural, undetectable fashion. He also investigated the characteristics of hair that contribute to visual hair density, resulting in the ISHRS’ presentation on the Hair Diameter Index. He authored the chapter entitled "Follicular Unit Transplantation: Dissecting and Planting Techniques" for the Facial Plastic Surgery Clinics of North America: Hair Restoration edition. He continues to be at the forefront of biotechnology in the investigation of cell multiplication for the treatment of hair loss.
The second edition of Dr. Harris’ book, The Hair Replacement Revolution, was published in 2013.
James Harris, MD, FACS, received his medical degree with honors from the University of Colorado School of Medicine in 1989. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Otolaryngology, Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and a member of the American Academy of Otolaryngology and the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery.
