FUE Hair Transplant Instruments FAQs
WHAT IS THE NEW HEX DISPOSABLE PUNCH?
Central to the Harris S.A.F.E. System™, the Scribe is a physician-designed device that uses blunt (dull) dissection to isolate the follicular units from the surrounding tissue so that subsequent transplantation can occur with greater success.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF THE HEX PUNCH?
- Low Transection rate of 2.8%
- Rapid increase in productivity
- Easy to learn technique
- Excellent clinical results
- Single Use Disposable
The Hex is not recommended for body hair. Body hair exit angles are very acute, and the square corners on the Hex rub the skin. Body hair is best extracted with our round punches.
HOW MANY GRAFTS CAN A SINGLE DISPOABLE HEX PUNCH EXTRACT?
A single disposable punch can extract up to 4000 grafts.
I AM NEW TO THE POWERED HARRIS S.A.F.E. SYSTEM™ FOR FUE, SHOULD I USE THE HEX OR THE ROUND PUNCH?
If you are just getting started with the Powered Harris S.A.F.E. System™, we recommend beginning with the Hex punch. It is our most advanced and innovative punch for FUE. However, different punches are used in different situations with different patients. A range of punches in your surgical “toolkit” is useful. To try a range of punches we recommend purchasing the Scribe Sample Package. The Scribe Sample Package includes: Two-0.9mm Hex, Two-1.0 Hex, Two-0.8mm, Two-0.9mm, and Two-1mm. This is a good way to get started and to see which punches you prefer.
CAN I USE THE HEX WITH THE ORIGINAL CHUCK MODEL AT-1?
No. The Hex only fits the new chuck model HSAT. The new chuck works with our current machine.
HOW LONG WILL PUNCHES FOR THE ORIGINAL CHUCK MODEL AT-1 BE AVAILABLE?
The original chuck model AT-1, and the punches that fit it, will be phased out and no longer available as of July 1, 2015. This transition period is being provided to our current customers as they switch to the new chuck model HSAT and the punches that fit this model.
IS THE TIP ON THE NEW DISPOSABLE ROUND PUNCH THE SAME AS THE ORIGINAL REUSABLE ROUND PUNCH?
Yes, it is the same blunt punch tip. The only difference is that it is now a single use disposable punch.
WHAT IS THE HARRIS S.A.F.E. SYSTEM™?
The Harris S.A.F.E. System™ is an advanced approach to optimizing follicular unit extraction (FUE) for more successful surgical hair restoration. The System integrates patented instrumentation, proven “best practice” procedures and focused training.
WHAT IS THE S.A.F.E. PUNCH?
Central to the S.A.F.E. System™, our punches are physician-designed devices that use blunt dissection to isolate the follicular units from the surrounding tissue so that subsequent transplantation can occur with greater success.
WHY IS BLUNT TECHNOLOGY IMPORTANT?
Blunt technology results in a much lower transection rate—from 2.8 to 8 percent on average. It allows a deeper and more complete dissection of the follicular unit grafts.
WHY DID HSC DEVELOPMENT SWITCH TO DISPOSABLE PUNCHES?
We received ongoing requests from our international customers for a single use disposable punch as regulations for sterilizing follicular unit extraction instruments vary from country to country. It is our commitment to meet the needs of our customers and disposable punches supports our diverse group of customers.
WHO DEVELOPED THE HARRIS S.A.F.E. SYSTEM AND WHY?
James A. Harris, MD, surgeon, medical director and founder of the Hair Sciences Center of Colorado and a global leader in FUE restoration. Dr. Harris designed the Harris S.A.F.E. System™ and patented the instrumentation. The System was developed to address specific the issues he encountered using the traditional sharp punch for FUE procedures.
HOW IS THE S.A.F.E. SCRIBE DIFFERENT FROM OTHER DEVICES?
There are several key differences:
- One: The blunt technology has a lower transection rate and a deeper dissection that allows more viable follicular units being available for transplant compared to sharp-dissection.
- Two: The reduced time between extraction and implantation—a major factor in outcome. Three: The rapid learning curve for physician users. Most report highly productive experiences in their first post-training procedure.
WHAT ADVANTAGES DO THESE FUE INSTRUMENTS OFFER THE PATIENT SEEKING FUE HAIR RESTORATION?
In addition to the confirmed patient benefits of FUE—no linear scarring, more natural outcomes and more—the Harris S.A.F.E. System™ makes it possible for virtually every individual to become an FUE candidate.
WHAT BENEFITS DOES IT OFFER THE PRACTICE INTEGRATING THIS TECHNOLOGY?
In addition to broadening patient candidacy, the S.A.F.E. System delivers a proven, low-maintenance technology that can exponentially expand the number of FUE procedures a practice can manage.
WHERE IS IT IN USE INTERNATIONALLY?
In addition to many practices throughout the United States, the S.A.F.E. System™ is now assisting FUE surgeons in Canada, Central and South America, Europe and Asia.
IS THERE A DEPTH LIMITER ON THE S.A.F.E. SCRIBE?
There is a depth limiter at 4.1 mm. The reason this depth was chosen is that it allows the most complete dissection possible while minimizing transection rates. However, there is no requirement to go to the full depth. If the surgeon finds that inserting the punch 1/2 or 2/3 of the total depth is resulting in an adequate dissection, the punch can be withdrawn before reaching the limiter.
HOW MANY GRAFTS PER HOUR CAN I EXPECT TO ACHIEVE?
Dr. Harris consistently averages 750-1000 per hour. With practice, a physician new to FUE should be able to obtain 500-800 grafts per hour in a few months.
WHAT IS THE AVERAGE TRANSECTION RATE WITH THE S.A.F.E. SYSTEM™?
On average, physicians using the system report a transection rate of 2.8 to 8 percent across all FUE procedures. This includes all ethnicities and harvest sites, including scalp, chest and beard regions.
DOES THE POWERED S.A.F.E. SCRIBE ROTATE OR OSCILLATE?
The system uses unidirectional rotation (left or right) to achieve the optimal blunt punch entry and dissection. Oscillation with a blunt punch for FUE does not work well.
IS THERE SPEED CONTROL?
Yes, but the correct speed may vary from patient to patient (due to skin quality differences) and from one location on the scalp to the next. In general, the optimal speed is the one that is fast enough to allow easy entry of the punch into the skin, but where there is significant slowing of the rotation speed with punch advancement. Setting the proper speed is a critical step and instructions on how to accomplish this are included in the instructional DVD.
IS THE HAND PIECE DIRECT OR ANGLED?
Direct, as it is better ergonomically and easier to align with the emerging hair angles and directions.
WHAT TRAINING IS AVAILABLE FOR S.A.F.E. SYSTEM™ PHYSICIANS? FOR THEIR ASSISTANTS?
An instructional DVD is included with all systems and small-group training sessions can be arranged. A limited number of 1:1 training opportunities are also available. In addition, Dr. Harris and his surgical assistant are active in the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgeons (ISHRS) and provide training at many ISHRS conferences.
